"Colonel" Sam McLaughlin, originally a carriage builder, began assembling and building Buicks in Canada in 1907 under an agreement with Billy Durant. When his McLaughlin Motor Company (originally called McLaughlin Carriage Company) was acquired by GM and re-named General Motors of Canada in 1918, all of the GM brands were just as popular in Canada as in the U.S.
