1919, Frigidaire Gives GM a Non-Automotive Edge

Billy Durant bought an unknown company called Guardian Frigerator, whose owners were attempting to invent a commercial refrigerator, and sold it to General Motors in 1919 for $100,000 (the amount he paid for it). Eight years later, the re-named Frigidaire division was the leader in refrigerators and contributed more than $15 million to the company’s net earnings.
