Following the "copper-cooled" engine debacle, Alfred Sloan was elected President of General Motors and immediately set about to improve communication, coordination, and efficiency among the company’s diverse operating units. His famous philosophy of "decentralized operations with coordinated control" soon became the model for all modern corporations.
