This car has a great amount of sentimental value to me. My family purchased the vehicle brand new when I was only 6 years old, so I have in some ways grown up with this car. It is also a monumental vehicle for Saab, as it was built the second to last year of production of the successful 900 model. The 900 had been the evolution of the Saab 99 from the 1970s and Saab managed to maintain in the 900 the basic shape, design, and proportions from the 1970s car. It also marks the beginning of GM’s future with Saab, as GM had purchased half of Saab in 1990.

Features I love about the car include the firm suspension, oversized sunroof, cockpit inspired windshield, leather bucket seats, and surprising cargo space. Another feature on the vehicle you do not see very often is a manual transmission. I learned stick shift in this car, so as a result I always feel most in tune with the Saab’s shifting style and feel.

I am always surprised by the response and attention I receive due to this car. I have received multiple unsolicited offers to buy the car from adults with fond memories of Saabs during their teenage years or even those looking for a fun quirky weekend car. The car is definitely quirky and unique, as there are very few 900s of this era left on the road. A response that I receive when someone discovers that I drive a 900 is: "they’re built like a tank".

An unanticipated benefit from the car is I can always find my car in a parking lot, as the design sticks out in a lot of current midsize sedans and SUVs. The car has been properly maintained, with a full service record and most repairs done at an authorized Saab dealership with authentic Saab parts.

The car is still capable of a commuting workload as I drive it to the GM Tech Center for work or even to Ann Arbor for school. This car has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and because of that, I value it and enjoy driving it every day.

GM’s Century Cruise pays tribute to GM’s past and the passion owners have for their vehicles. On Saturday, August 16, 2008 this vehicle and more than 100 other classic GM vehicles will cruise from the GM Global Headquarters at the Renaissance Center up Woodward Avenue to the heart of the Woodward Dream Cruise in Royal Oak and the surrounding suburbs. One of these vehicles will be crowned “top cruiser” based on a text voting campaign.
