Hughes Electronics’ DirecTV, the first high-power direct broadcast satellite television system in the U.S., was the most successful consumer electronics product launch ever executed up to that time. It was later sold to the News Corporation as part of a corporate re-focusing on the core automotive business.

GM acquired Hughes Aircraft in 1985 and merged it with Delco Electronics to form a new subsidiary called Hughes Electronics. Hughes launched DirecTV to consumers in 1994. Hughes was sold to News Corporation in December, 2003.
