Following the regional consolidations in Europe and North America, all GM automotive operations worldwide were brought together in a single organization, GM Automotive Operations, marking the first time all the company’s automotive units functioned as one team. In the photo, GM CEO Jack Smith enunciates the global strategy at GM’s first Global Leadership Conference, held in Orlando, Florida, in 1997.
