GM Commemorates 1.5 Millionth Corvette
"….For nearly 60 years we have built America's sports car, and this milestone is a solid proof point…."
- Karen Rafferty, Chevrolet Product Marketing Director
Fifty-six years after the first legendary Corvette rolled off the assembly line, General Motors has produced 1.5 million of America’s sports cars. Chevrolet Product Marketing Director Karen Rafferty made the announcement at the June meeting of the Greater Atlanta Automotive Media Association.
"The 1.5 millionth Corvette is a great example of how Chevy is America's Brand," Rafferty said. "For nearly 60 years we have built America's Sports Car and this milestone is a solid proof point."
The 1.5 millionth Corvette, built on May 28, 2009 at its GM Bowling Green Assembly Plant, marks a momentous occasion for bow tie fans around the world. It is a convertible 3LT and like its predecessors (built in 1953, 1977 and 1992 respectively), it features a white exterior with red interior and a black top.
For over 60 years and Six Generations, Chevrolet has been producing the Corvette. After completing a production-ready prototype on December 22, 1953; the first Corvette, a convertible two-seat sports car with Polo White paint and red interior, was shipped to New York City, where it made its public debut at the GM Motorama show at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on January 17 1953. America’s first production sports car ever built, rolled off the Van Slyke plant assembly line on June 30, 1953 in Flint, Michigan-only five months after it had debuted at the Waldorf. It was the first production car to be manufactured with a fiberglass body and only 300 were built that first year of production--by hand.
By 1969, the 250,000th Corvette was built, and the St. Louis, Missouri, plant hit the 500,000 mark in 1977. It took 15 years to get from 500,000 to one million in 1992 and it took an additional 17 years to get from one million to 1.5 million cars.
